The Ancient Ritual
What is Shirodhara?
Shirodhara comes from two Sanskrit words – Shiro (head) and Dhara (flow). It is a classical Ayurvedic therapy in which a steady, gentle stream of warm liquid is poured over the forehead, the area of the Ajna or third-eye point.
The continuous, rhythmic flow calms the nervous system, quietens a busy mind and helps the body settle into deep relaxation. Traditionally it is used to pacify Vata dosha, the energy linked to restlessness, worry and poor sleep.

The Science
How Shirodhara Works
The continuous pressure of the falling liquid creates a gentle vibration across the forehead. This is thought to be passed on through the nervous system, producing a naturally tranquilising effect on the mind.

A steady stream of warm liquid on the forehead
Receptors
Skin receptors sense the gentle pressure and vibration
Nerve Impulse
Signals travel softly through the nerves
Relaxed Mind
The brain settles towards a calm alpha state

How to Use Surya Shirodhara
Assemble the Stand
Put the unit together following the manual – it takes just a few minutes.
Place the Pot
Seat the Shirodhara pot securely on the top ring, above the headrest.
Warm the Oil
Heat 1.3–1.5 L of oil separately to around 38°C (100.4°F) – comfortably warm, never hot.
Fill with Nozzle Closed
Pour the warm oil into the pot with the valve closed. Do not fill to the brim.
Lie Back & Relax
Rest your head on the headrest, open the valve and let the gentle stream flow.
Tip: The oil collects in the base chamber and can be strained and reused for several sessions.

Questions & Answers
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use this Shirodhara equipment at home?
Yes. The set is portable, lightweight and requires no fixed installation, so it can be used at home, in a treatment room or at a wellness clinic. We recommend your first sessions are guided by a practitioner.
Which oil should I use?
This depends on your constitution (Prakriti) and current imbalance. Tridoshic oils suit most people; your practitioner can recommend a specific oil, buttermilk, milk or decoction for you.
How long does one session last?
A typical session lasts 30–60 minutes. Traditionally, a course is taken over 3, 7, 14 or 28 days, as advised by your practitioner.
Can the oil be reused?
Yes. The oil collects in the built-in chamber and, once strained, can be reused for a few sessions by the same person. Replace it when it changes colour or smell.
Do I need someone to help me?
Having a helper makes the first sessions easier, but the set is designed to be simple enough to use on your own once you are familiar with it.
Do you offer Shirodhara sessions or training?
Yes – you can book a Shirodhara therapy session or learn the technique through our Ayurveda Heaven Academy. Get in touch to find out more.
